A developed plot, interesting characters, and a good sense of humor. When students were asked about what made them like a T.V. show, the answers were very similar in style. But what shows captured all of these qualities? Well, look no further for a series that will transport you into magical worlds and energizing plots.

The third most voted show was a series that followed in the footsteps of a very popular series: Andor. A prequel to the original Star Wars trilogy, it came out on September 21st, 2022, and featured protagonist Cassian Andor, a character first seen in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, a movie from December, 2016. Many students complimented its compelling soundtrack and incredible acting as some of the reasons they loved the show. Although the first season ended recently, fans are looking forward to the undetermined release of season 2. The show is available to watch on Disney+.

Moon Knight, another series connected to a bigger plot, is a show based on the popular Marvel comics by Stan Lee of the same name and was voted the second best show. “Moon Knight is different to other shows in [the Marvel Cinematic Universe] in the way that it doesn't try to expand in worldbuilding in the series as a whole, but instead focuses on our protagonist's story and the world they take on,” Sophomore Jayden Santos says. It stars Oscar Issacc and May Calamawy as they search for a long lost treasure with the help of the Egyptian moon god, Khonsu. Santos explains that episode three is their favorite “because of its cinematography.” You can find this series on Disney+, as well as other movies and shows in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

But with over twenty different shows in the running for first, this show won by a landslide due to its character development and unique usage of black and white film throughout its seven years running. “[Better Call Saul] creates its own characters that always make decisions and do things that seem like what their character would do and builds up the characters to feel like real people,” Sophomore Hayden White enthuses. Better Call Saul is the hit series that’s connected to one of the most famous T.V. shows in history, Breaking Bad, as well as the epilogue movie, El Camino. With its final season airing on August 15, 2022, viewers had nothing but positive feelings about how well rounded the show had been. “Favorite episode… hard to say, but probably season 6 episode 7, Plan and Execution,” White says, “it puts two characters who you follow throughout the entire show in this episode for only a single moment, and serves as a the point of no return for the main character.” You can find this, and the two other installments of the Breaking Bad franchise, on Netflix.

It’s good to get outside your comfort zone, especially when it comes to the media we consume. Maybe these shows will be pulled up in your queue, perhaps you won’t give them a second thought, but one thing’s for sure – 2023 will have a lot to live up to in the minds of students.
