‘Remote Work May Now Last for Two Years, Worrying Some Bosses’, ‘Half of U.S. now within COVID ‘very high risk’ category’, ‘3,098 New Breakthrough Cases for the Last Week’
These are all headlines you may have glanced over as they popped up in your notification feed. But while they may seem exaggerated, they are all pieces to a greater problem that could drastically alter our lives.
The new Delta variant of COVID-19 has caused tremendous damage worldwide. As California stands right now, it is well within the ‘very high’ risk category or above, with much of Northern California within the New York Times’ “extremely high” risk category . Us readers may feel like these headlines are an exaggeration, but as the virus continues to spread, the entire world could be put back into another state of lockdown just like 2020.
These kinds of surges happen in a similar way to how lilypads spread across a pond. As cases double each week, it is possible for the cases to jump from half the population to the entire population. While an outbreak of this magnitude may be extremely unlikely, it is definitely happening within smaller communities, and with it, comes an all too real memory, remote school.
Furthermore, due to the decrease in ventilation that comes with a colder climate, December is the season where illness happens to be most common and it may be sooner than you think. As this looms over us, people should do all they can to stay safe, such as getting vaccinated, wearing stronger masks, and staying sanitary. It may feel like one person is insignificant, but as a community, one contribution becomes crucial, and staying persistent is the best we can do.
